Whenever asked, any suggestion for buying any electronic item is usually followed by three questions via me:
1. Your Budget? : A strong tip, always try to go a little over your budget or at least the high end of your budget, if your answer to the last question is 4 years or higher. Believe me on this one.
2. Your needs/wants? : A very very strong advice, do not confuse your needs with wants. Be absolutely clear of what you need it for and do not hide that just because you feel shameful or don't wish to disclose it. Whether it is you want to game, study, casual use, professional use, programming and software development; whatever the use case might be, be absolutely clear about what you wish to do. I have seen many many people and posts of people trying to get this and that and that in a low constricted budget and let their needs and expectations fly. When you get some you loose some, and that's why, be very clear about what you need it for.
The reason i am saying this is different use case call for very different components' strength.
Let's say you are a programmer :
You need a good and sturdy keyboard(very important- good key travel(1.8mm minimum), good tactile feedback, backlight keyboard a necessity, well spaced keys and numpad available if possible(it won't be in 14 inch laptops, but not really required), keys should not wobble and keyboard deck flex should be almost negligible),
a good build quality(lenovo and hp produce some of the best keyboards, dell and lenovo are known for good build qualities),
a lots of modern ports, good wifi card, prefer screen size less than 16 inch (14 recommended),
a good cpu(i5-12th gen minimum or ryzen 7 7000/8000 series recommended),
a good battery life(prefer ryzen cpus or arm cpus for that, good battery life and good performance - snapdragon windows laptops or macbooks),
good if they have linux support and
lightweight(should be ~2kg).
If you are a gamer, then you'd want a good display(16 inch minimum, 100% srgb if possible, otherwise 45% NTSC is good as well, IPS display or ips level atleast - a VA display),
a good dgpu(discrete graphics processing unit, also known as graphics card, 3050 minimum to play at acceptable framerate at 1080p, recommended is 2060/3060/4060 for 1080p gaming, 2070/3070/4070 for 1440p gaming, 2080/3080/4080 for 2k(with ray tracing) or 4k gaming, 3080ti/3090/4090 for 4k gaming with ray tracing enabled),
good thermals(try to keep your cpu below 80C and gpu below 70c at all times),
good cpu(i7-12th gen minimum),
lots of ram(16gb for 1080p gaming, 24gb for 1440p and 32 gb for 4k) and
ssd (at least 512 gb nvme gen 4 recommended).
I recommend using a headphone/earphone(do check if laptop has headphone jack if using wired headphone) for best experience in gaming, otherwise also check for good speakers, but it would unnecessarily increase your cost and the experience still wouldn't be as good as even with medium quality headphones/earphones.
If you are a professional user for office work or casual use, good enough screen (ips or ips level),
good keyboard if for professional use,
good speaker,
good camera (1080p minimum),
good wifi card,
good selection of ports(hdmi, display port support, usb c , usb a , fast charging support, thunderbolt port, sd card, headphone jack),
good build quality,
good and large touchpad,
numpad presence necessary for office uses.
If for creative uses,
a very good display (OLED is good otherwise IPS at the minimum, 100%srgb, 100% DCI-P3 minimum),
good dgpu(rtx 4090, rtx 4080, rtx 3080ti, rtx 2080 super, try to be above xx70 tier),
some ports necessary( sd card reader, display port support, hdmi, headphone jack),
good touchpad,
lots of ram - 32 gb or more.
3. How long you plan to use it for at the minimum? : An average you can expect a device to function is 4 years. Unless it's something like desktop pc, it almost certainly will die or will start dying in 4 years. If you want to extend that, go for things like, better thermals, better build quality, try to remove things you do not need and get stronger things you need, or get a bigger budget.
Try to compare components from reviews and devices from sites like nanoreview and smartprix.
Also read/watch reviews from youtube and reddit or other related forum threads.
I highly recommend 'Jarrod's tech' youtube channel for in depth and to the point reviews of gaming laptops specifically, if you want to know about pc stuff from the very basics, i recommend 'The Mysterious Tech', he explains stuff very to the point and in simple terms, so you understand even if you are new to this all.
Whenever in doubt, reach out to one of these forums, you will get quick help, but still double check each information you receive, after all, this is your money, no one else is accountable if it gets wasted but you. So, research well. Your question didn't answer any of the three questions above, so i just gave some general advice i have.
The amount of RAM you need depends on your computer usage. For basic tasks like browsing and document creation, 4GB or 8GB is usually sufficient. For more demanding tasks like photo editing, streaming media, or gaming, 16GB or more may be needed. For professional-level content creation or high-end gaming, 32GB or even more[LINK] might be required. It's difficult to definitively say whether Dell or HP is "better" as both brands offer a wide range of laptops with varying specifications and features. The best choice depends on individual needs and preferences. Dell is generally known for its durable construction, strong performance, and good customer service, while HP is known for its stylish designs, innovative features, and sometimes better battery life.
