Az 1999-ben kiadott és azóta híressé vált játék jó kis hangulatával elég népes rajongótábort gyűjtött maga köré, ám a számuk egy kicsit megcsappant a DRIV3R és a Driver Paraller Lines alatt, mert a készítők eltérni látszódtak az 50-es 60-as évek autós filmjeit idéző hangulattól. Tanulva ebből a hibából, az E3 beharangozóján a Ubisoft Reflections kreatív producere, Martin Edmondson kijelentette, hogy a sorozat az ötödik résszel visszatér a gyökerekhez.
