Anyone who fights for freedom can be called a freedom fighter. This game is also about America's fight for freedom against Russia, so the characters of this game are freedom fighters.
But that has nothing to do with EA & IO-Interactive's 2003 game "Freedom Fighters".

Although it is clear that this game is inspired by "Freedom Fighters".

"The story" (in Freedom Fighters) is about how a regular plumber named Christopher Stone got involved with the resistance and what was the consequences of that.
This is not the story of this game.

It's the sequel to 2011's game, Homefront. Which was developed by Kaos Studios and published by THQ. It don't have the same story but the same setting.
